Jane McCarthy is Consultant Psychiatrist with the Mental Health in Learning Disabilities Service, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust & Honorary Research Associate, Estia Centre, Health Service and Population Research Department, Institute of Psychiatry, UK.

 

She trained in the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability at St. George’s, University of London and as Lecturer at University College London. She has worked as a senior clinician in intellectual disability services across England including child, adolescent and adult services. She has taught at a number of academic centres for the specialty including University College London, University of Cambridge and University of Newcastle.

 

Her main areas of research are the mental health needs of people with intellectual disability specifically people with Down syndrome and those with autism spectrum disorders.  She is an elected member on the Executive Committees of the Learning Disability Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Honorary Treasurer/President-elect of Intellectual Disability Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine. She is a member of the editorial board of Advances in Mental Health and Learning Disabilities journal.
