Professor Nigel Beail    (President)

 

 

 

Nigel is President of the European Association for Mental Health in Intellectual Disabilities. He was elected to the Executive Committee in 2003 and then became Vice President in 2007 and President in 2009.

 

Nigel is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who works with people who have intellectual disabilities. He is Professional Head of Psychological Services for NHS Barnsley and Head of Psychological Services for People who have intellectual disabilities for Barnsley Learning Disability Services. His clinical work includes providing psychological interventions to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities who present with a wide range of problems. He specializes in work with clients who self injure, those that offend or have significant mental health problems. Nigel has a particular interest in the provision and evaluation of psychological interventions for people who have intellectual disabilities and has pioneered outcome research in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

 

 Nigel is Professor and Clinical Lecturer at the Clinical Psychology Unit, Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield., UK. He has published extensively on practiced based research from his clinical work.

 

Nigel is also Secretary of the UK Institute of Psychotherapy and Disability and a Trustee of the British Institute of Learning Disabilities. He is a committee member of the British Psychological Society's Faculty for Learning Disability.
